Western Highlands Unveils Vision for Tourism Growth at National Conference

Western Highlands Province is poised to become a major player in Papua New Guinea’s tourism industry  under the leadership of Governor Wai Rapa.

With a range of  development initiatives aimed at driving economic growth, preserving cultural heritage and promoting tourism.

Richard Lazarus, Executive Manager of the Division of Commerce, Culture and Tourism in Western Highlands Province, shared his vision for the province’s tourism development in an exclusive interview with the PNG HERALD and Vision4040 Publishing network on April 9, 2025.

The National Tourism Conference  and  Expo 2025, where Mr. Lazarus shared his insights, took place on April 9-10, 2025, at the Hilton Hotel in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The conference brought together industry leaders and stakeholders to discuss the country’s tourism sector, with a focus on elevating Papua New Guinea’s tourism industry and exploring strategies for growth and development. The event was opened by Prime Minister James Marape.

Mr Lazarus outlined key initiatives aimed at driving economic growth, preserving cultural heritage and promoting tourism in Western Highlands Province under the leadership of Governor Rapa. These include:

Multi-Purpose Manufacturing Centre

A long-term plan is underway to create a multi-purpose manufacturing Centre catering to the Highlands region. The centre will focus on processing local products like pineapple, spices, rice and wheat, boosting employment opportunities and economic growth.

Cultural Preservation

A dedicated mission will be established to revive lost cultures, traditions and ways of life for the people of Western Highlands Province. This initiative aims to preserve the province’s rich cultural heritage and promote cultural tourism.

Tourism Development

The province is set to unveil an enrichment pack featuring activities like fairy wheels, water sliding, canoe riding and horse riding. Western Highlands Province also boasts bird viewing sites, orchid farms and the Bayer Wildlife Centre, showcasing its rich biodiversity.

Heritage Site Revival

The Cook Heritage site, a significant historical landmark, will be restored and promoted as a key tourist attraction. The province will also leverage its fresh produce and natural attractions to promote agro-tourism.

Sister City Arrangement

Western Highlands Province is exploring partnerships with New Zealand for tourism, investment, business and education development. This initiative builds on the long-standing friendship between Papua New Guineans and New Zealanders.

Mr. Lazarus expressed his enthusiasm for the province’s development plans, saying, “We want to promote and develop Western Highlands Province into a hub for economic growth, cultural preservation and tourism. We believe that our unique blend of cultural experiences, natural beauty and adventure activities will make us an attractive destination for tourists.”

The PNG HERALD and Vision4040 Publishing network are proud to share Western Highlands Province’s development plans with our readers. We look forward to seeing the province’s progress and growth in the years to come.
