PORT MORESBY: Yesterday, (12.03.2025), the PNG Parliament rose to honor the late Sir Julius Chan, Papua New Guinea’s last man standing, who passed away on January 30, 2025. As part of the many tributes paid, Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas delivered a heartfelt speech, acknowledging Sir Julius’s remarkable contributions to the nation.
“The Nation mourns the loss of another of our founding Fathers, a political titan, whose life and influence, has shaped the fabric of our country,” Sir Peter said.
Sir Peter acknowledged Sir Julius’s commitment to indigenous economic empowerment and local ownership of resources, quoting: “He understood the need for Papua New Guineans to control their own destinies and the benefit from the wealth of their land.”
He also recognized Sir Julius’s leadership in provincial government decentralization reforms in 1996, saying: “His leadership in bringing about provincial government decentralization reforms in 1996, is one testament, one testament, to his belief that this country must stay united.”
Sir Peter also reflected on Sir Julius’s decision to step aside after the Sandline Crisis in 1997, saying: “While controversial as it was, demonstrated a profound respect for the institution of Government to upholding the principles of good governance and accountability and the will of the people.”
He encouraged the current generation of leaders to follow Sir Julius’s example and strive to build a stronger, more prosperous, and united Papua New Guinea, saying: “How then do we, the current generation of leaders, honor the legacy of Sir Julius Chan and Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare? We do so by embracing the values of each champion – integrity, accountability, and a deep respect for the institution and laws that govern our nation.”
The Enga Governor concluded his tribute by offering condolences to Sir Julius’s family and the people of Namatanai and New Ireland, saying: “To Sir J’s family and to the people of Namatanai and New Ireland – the people of Enga Province offer our heartfelt appreciation for the lifetime of service he dedicated to our people and our beautiful country. Thank you for sharing him with us, your loss is our loss and we stand with you in honouring his life and legacy. May his soul rest in peace.”
