TARI: Detainees at the Hawa Jail in Hela Province completed a week long cattle farming course on how to look after cows for consumption and sales.
The training which commenced on Monday and ended on Friday (25.04.2025) and involved hands on and theory lessons. The programme is funded through the PNG law and Justice partnership and facilitated 26 detainees and eight Correctional Service prison staff.
Hela Provincial Administration Director and facilitator Pulupe Wauwe said the training on cattle farming teaches skills and knowledge on different cows, how to look after them, feed them and how to manage small scale business and for consumption.
He stated the Practical lessons involved erecting cow paddocks, finding the correct location and the right level of fencing for a cattle farm and the fencing should be completed by June.
Hawa CS Acting Commander Simon Kitingi said “This training is in line with PNGCS vision for detainee’s rehabilitation whilst serving time in prison and such training prepares the detainees to contribute meaningfully when released back into the society.
“It is a very important activity and given the setting in the province, we decided to bring a more practical training that matches the lifestyle in Hela. Most of the locals here are into farming, raising poultry, piggery and even cattle farming. This is to make sure a detainee gets the much needed skills and knowledge, whilst in prison. The world is changing and we have to be as practical as much as possible so detainees can adapt and participate meaningfully in their communities.
“We have initiated so many other training programmes as part of rehabilitation and as an ongoing Bible study training we started in 2021 where a total of 23 detainees have completed and awarded certificates which was conducted by the Evangelical Church of PNG at Tagali in Hela,” he said.
He said most of the training materials and miscellaneous were funded through the facilitating agencies and covering detainees lesson books, stationeries, practical materials and meals.(ENDS)
