
AIC launches Independent Investigation into Plane Crash

PORT MORESBY: PAPUA New Guinea Accident Investigation Commission (AIC) has launched an independent investigation to determine the circumstances and contributing factors to a recent plane crash in Ramu that claimed the life of the pilot.
Civil Aviation Minister Wake Goi confirmed this saying the aviation sector’s safety needs to enhanced whilst addressing especially aircraft accidents around the country.
On 20 April 2025, an expatriate pilot was conducting routine low- level agricultural spraying over sugar cane plantations at Sankiang village in the Ramu valley of Madang when the accident occurred. There was also a fire that destroyed the aircraft.
Upon impact, the plane instantly lit up into flames causing the pilot to sustain burn injuries and losing his life shortly after being rescued from the plane.
“I commend the courageous efforts of the Locals who risked their own lives to try to rescue the pilot from the burning aircraft. Unfortunately, the burns were severe and extensive, and the pilot later died as a result at the Ramu Agri Industry Clinic,” he said.
Goi stated the Papua New Guinea Accident Investigation Commission (AIC) has launched an independent investigation to determine the circumstances and contributing factors of this accident.
As stated, An AIC team is on-site, conducting inquiries in accordance with international civil aviation standards.
“The investigation will provide critical insights to enhance aviation safety, and a report with findings and recommendations will be released in due course. We have a commitment to the safety of the travelling public and will continue to uphold the highest standards of aviation safety and oversight, ensuring that lessons from this tragedy are applied to prevent future incidents,” he said.
Goi also raised concerns on images and videos circulating on social media regarding the accident. He urged the public to exercise compassion and discretion, particularly by refraining from sharing images of the deceased pilot. (ENDS)
