Governor Powi’s Clarion Call for Leadership Blueprints: Unity and Human Values – 50 years on for PNG
Souther Highlands Governor William Powi makes a clarion call for leadership in PNG-50 years on. "True leadership must value the principles of humanity and human values."

Port Moresby: As Papua New Guinea navigates a critical season of transition, Southern Highlands Governor William Powi’s voice rings out with a clarion call to leadership. In a soul-stirring statement shared with the PNG Herald Online yesterday (Tuesday , February 4th , 2025), Governor Powi challenged the Nation’s leaders to arise and take ownership of the challenge of unity.

Governor Powi made the Call this week in Port Moresby, while paying tribute to late Sir Julius Chan, one of PNG’s founding Prime Ministers.

“Who will carry this nation? Who will unite this Nation?” Governor Powi asked his questions echoing through the chambers of the Nation’s heart.

Governor Powi stressed that these values are essential for leadership and must be promoted throughout the country.

“The next generation of leaders for this country must have the values of honesty, unity , love. These great values must be embedded in the breadth and width of this country. Emphasis must be embedded into the 89 districts. We must live at international levels. We must emphasise principles of good governance and at the same time the values of humanity, just like what the United States does.  Great qualities of democracy, justice, rule of law. These things are part and partial of leadership. We must promote these. And if we don’t place this as a value system, then, we must not talk about it and pretend and kid ourselves. We must embed this into our thinking.”

Looking to the future, Governor Powi envisioned a new generation of leaders who embody honesty, unity, and love.

“The next generation of leaders for this country must have the values of honesty, unity, love. These great values must be embedded in the breadth and width of this country. Emphasis must be embedded into the 89 districts,” he urged.

Governor Powi’s call to leadership is not just directed at the national level. He is calling on the leaders of Papua New Guinea’s 89 districts to arise and take ownership of the challenge of unity.

“We must ensure that these values are not just confined to our districts, but must reach the breath and width of the nation as we progress in unity towards the future. We must live at international levels. We must give our people the best in as far as human values goes,” he stressed.

As Papua New Guinea stands at the crossroads of political independence and economic transformation in the next 50 years going forth, Governor Powi’s call to leadership is a powerful reminder that the nation’s future is not just shaped by its leaders, but by the values they uphold.

Governor Powi’s statement serves as a blueprint for leadership in Papua New Guinea over the next 50 years, emphasizing the importance of unity, good governance, and values-based leadership. His words are a timely reminder of the nation’s potential and the need for leaders to work together towards a common goal.

Will you answer the call to true leadership? Will you arise to the challenge of unity, and help shape a brighter future for Papua New Guinea?
